Hop Along - Waitress
ホップ・アロングは米フィラデルフィアのフリーク・フォークのカルテットだ。メンバーはFrances Quinlan（V/G）、Mark Quinlan（D）、Tyler Long（B）、Joe Reinhart（G）。元々は、バンドの中心メンバーのFrancesが高校生だった2004年に、アコースティックのフリーク・フォークのソロ・プロジェクトとして始まった。当時は”Hop Along, Queen Ansleis”という名のもと活動しており、このアーティスト名で2005年の夏にアルバム『Freshman Year』をリリースした。3年後の2008年、Francesの兄弟であるMark Quinlanがこのプロジェクトに加わり、2009年にはTyler Longが加わった。これを機にプロジェクト名は短縮され”Hop Along（ホップ・アロング）”となり、Francesのソロからバンドへと変更した。バンドとなったホップ・アロングは2009年にEP『Wretches』をリリース。2012年にはファースト・アルバム『Get Disowned』をリリースし、2014年にサドル・クリーク・レコーズと契約をした。
当『ペインテッド・シャット』は3年振りとなる2枚目のアルバムで、現在のメンバーでバンドとして作り上げた初めての作品だ。共同プロデュースはソニック・ユース、ダイナソーJR、カート・ヴァイル他を手掛けたことでも知られるJohn Agnello（ジョン・アグネロ）で、レコーディングとミックスも彼が行っている。Paste誌などが2015年に最も期待されるアルバムの1枚にあげるなどアルバムには大きな期待が持たれている。

Every word out of Frances Quinlan’s mouth suggests her soul is ripping apart. The Hop Along singer is indie rock’s very own Janis Joplin, delivering each lyric in the form of volatile wails that suggest her larynx is made of sandpaper. That kind of cat-screech risks turning Hop Along’s songs into fingernails-on-chalkboard irritants, but instead Quinlan’s abrasion is electrifying, rendering ・・・・・・

I hate when people throw around this kind of praise lightly, so please know that I am not throwing this praise around lightly: I have never heard a voice quite like Frances Quinlan’s. She is the charismatic lead singer of the Philly band Hop Along. I just sat here for ten minutes trying to think of a voice even a little bit like hers and FAILED.
