Director's Cut: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Behind the scenes of the goofball "Heart in Your Heartbreak" clip

Director's Cut is a Pitchfork News feature in which we chat with music video directors about their creations. The men and women behind the camera are often overlooked in today's YouTube era, but this feature aims to highlight their hard work while showcasing the best videos currently linking around the Internet. A little behind-the-scenes dirt couldn't hurt, too.

We recently spoke with Mike Luciano, the 23-year-old Brooklynite who helmed the Pains of Being Pure at Heart's brilliantly silly video for "Heart in Your Heartbreak". The clip has the indie pop group playing exuberant guitar-store-employee archetypes-- the ponytail, the nerd, the old guy, the goth, the crazy-haired drummer-- while trying to overcome a villainous co-worker in the name of loud music and fun times. A feel-good video you can really feel good about.

And it's only Luciano's second legit music clip. The first was a 1980s homage for his Long Island high school buddies Twin Sister, but "Heart in Your Heartbreak" is more in line with the goofball videos that make up most of his visual resume. The director originally met with Pains keyboardist Peggy Wang-- who conceived the video's overall premise-- and, just a couple weeks later, went to San Antonio's Alamo Music just before this year's SXSW to shoot it.
