Over the past six years, Times New Viking have made a career out of marrying inescapable pop resonance to treble-y, tinnitus-inducing static. Working with Matador for Rip It Off, the band turned in one of the most openly confrontational indie-pop records in recent memory, where a splitting headache was a risk no matter where you set the volume knob. It also proved to be their breakout record. Jumping over to Merge for their forthcoming full-length, Dancer Equired, the Columbus trio is at its most delicate on lead single "No Room to Live".

That's not to say that TNV are becoming wimpier before our eyes. In spite of a jangly, almost-twee-punk guitar line and the fact that keyboardist Beth Murphy-- and drummer Adam Elliott in the middle-eight-- are singing (not shouting, not bleating, but actually singing), the levels are still in the red and distortion is applied to every instrument in the mix. So they maintain the same grit they've always had throughout･･････
