最初のレコードと『A Way Forward』の制作プロセスは異なっていた。2020年にリリースされたファースト・アルバム『Introduction, Presence』はアイデア不足ではなくリソース不足の為、制作に4年を要した。バンドはOMDや初期のパンク／ニューウェイヴから多くのインスピレーションを得、Nation of Languageは何であるかについての明確なヴィジョンを持っていた。2021年11月5日にリリースされるセカンド・アルバム『A Way Forward』は全く異なったレコーディング体験をもたらした。ファーストの評判は想像していたものよりもはるかに優れていたので、自らを信頼して本能に従うのが最善と感じ、バンドはリラックスして自信を持って作業を進めた。はるかに短時間でレコーディングは行われたので、シングルのコレクションというよりも、本来のアルバムとして作品は完成した。収録曲のいくつかは、前作同様、Abe Seiferthとレコーディングを行ったが、数曲はブルックリンのスタジオでNick Millhiser（Holy Ghost!）が手掛けた。当時、バンドはKraftwerk、Laurie Spiegel、Cluster等をよく聴いていたので、クラウトロックや初期のエレクトロニック・ミュージックに根差す形でアルバムをまとめ上げた。
