Jeff MangumがNeutral Milk Hotelとして発表した2枚のフルアルバムは、時間の中と外の両方から聞こえてくる。1996年の『On Avery Island』と1998年の『In the Aeroplane Over the Sea』は、共有された潜在意識の翻訳のように、「世界をはっきりと見始め、それを処理し表現する」という若者の普遍的な精神を代弁するものだ。Neutral Milk Hotelは、エレファント6のシーンへの永遠の入り口と、可能性への不変の感覚を作り出したのだ。Mangumは1970年にルイジアナ州のラストンという小さな街で生まれ、80／90年代のインディ／パンクのアンダーグラウンドで育った。『In the Aeroplane Over the Sea』リリース後、突然バンドを脱退したMangumの神話は、その魅力的な曲そのものが、世代を超えて深く響いている。
