The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Heart In Your Heartbreak
This introverted New York four-piece gained great success with an eponymous debut in 2009 and connected with fans throughout the world as a consequence. A new found feeling of popularity came as something of a shock to a group who were self-admittedly uncool in high school, bonding over a love of obscure 80's indie in dark corners of the room while others danced at the prom. What has emerged from the individualism shown in these early years is an uncompromising belief in the music they bonded over and still hold to be pure.
Pains Of Being Pure At Heart were formed during the birthday party of the now keyboard and backing vocalist, Peggy Wang. A few bands were playing and so they hastily formed as a way of getting onstage, albeit without a drummer at the time. The new outfit nervously played five songs in ten minutes. After this exhilarating experience and with a drummer recruited, Kip Berman, Kurt Feldman, Alex Naidus, and Peggy became a much tighter unit.
The debut was purposefully naive, a record celebrating youthful energy with a tinge of lyrical introspection. A reverb soaked record in which smooth vocals weaved in and out of the brash guitars, was a winning slice of misfit melancholy. Young Adult Friction and Stay Alive emphasised the triumph.
Now, having been working on the follow-up earlier this year with Alan Moulder and Flood (Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine), the new record is to be released in Spring next year. Here is the first taster of what fans can expect, Heart In The Heartbreak, a song which retains all the hallmarks of the debut with a crisp sound set to bring even more popularity.
