●Katie Crutchfieldのプロジェクト、Waxahatcheeが前作『Out In The Storm』か ら2年半振りとなるニュー・アルバム『Saint Cloud』を3/27にMerge Recordsか らリリースすることを発表した。Merge Recordsとの契約後、最初のアルバム 『Ivy Tripp』(2015)、そしてSonic YouthやDinosour.Jrなどを手掛けてきたJohn Agnelloをプロデューサーに迎えた『Out In The Storm』(2017)での90年代のオ ルタナティヴ・ロックの質感をもった激しいギター、洗練されたノイズ、パン チのあるサウンドは現在彼女が拠点とするフィラデルフィアのシーンを特徴付け、急成長する新しい世代のシンガー・ソングライターに大きな影響を与えた。しかし最新作となる『Saint Cloud』で彼女は近作で試みていたサウンドのレイヤーを取り除き、自身の歌声と歌詞の為の空間を意識した。その試みは現代の代表的なストーリーテラーの 一人として登場した彼女に相応しい、モダンなタッチを兼ね備えたクラシックなアメリカーナ・サウンドを生み出した。
●レコーディングは2019年の夏にテキサス州トルニーロのSonic Ranchとニューヨーク州スタイベサントのLong Pondで、Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Big Red Machine)をプロデューサーに迎え行われた。またそのアルバムのビジョンを 確固たるものにするためにKatieはデトロイトを拠点とするバンド、Bonny DoomのBobby ColomboとBill Lennox、 Hiss Golden MessengerやBonny Light Horsemanで活動するJosh Kaufman、そしてKevin Morbyのバンドでプレイす るドラマー、Nick Kinseyをゲスト・ミュージシャンとして起用し、これまでのどのWaxahatcheeアルバムよりも幅広 いサウンドパレットを作り上げた。『Saint Cloud』はKatie Crutchfieldの新たな旅の始まりを告げる1枚だ。
